Doosan Infracore’s CNG Engine Received the US2010 Certification

On July 7th, Doosan Infracore announced that it had received the US2010 certification, which is a US regulation on emissions, for the CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine that it has developed to target the markets of advanced countries.

Doosan Infracore’s ‘GK 12’ engine had adopted the SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) technology; a global first for a CNG engine. As a result, dust and nitrogen oxide were reduced by more than 90%, while the fuel efficiency was 15% better than the competitors’ engines. Additionally, the engine showed strong competitiveness in terms of dependability, convenience in terms of system simplification and good customer service.

By receiving the US2010, Doosan Infracore was able to have the ‘GK 12’ engine installed in buses in the Californian region, which is known to have the world’s strictest regulations on emissions. Also, it was possible for Doosan Infracore to expand its business to the US vehicular gas engine market currently dominated by Cummins.

In October of last year, Doosan Infracore signed a supply contract for 332 ‘GK 12’ engines (amounting to US$ 10 million) with LA Metro Company on the condition that Doosan receives the US2010 certification. Now, the company plans to make its entry into the bus and garbage truck markets of large cities in the northeast, including California, New York and Washington.

By acquiring the world-class core technology to reduce emissions by the CNG engine, it is expected that Doosan will make further progress in developing the next-generation Euro-6 level diesel engine. In addition, continuous investment will be made in developing green engines.

The US2010 is the certification implemented by the US’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which is the world’s strictest regulation on emissions. It is a regulatory standard for emissions that is about twice as strict as the Euro-6 emission regulations, which will be applied in Europe starting from 2014. As of January 2010, the US2010 emissions regulations are being applied to diesel and CNG engines in vehicles all across the US.

○ SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) technology
The SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) technology is an innovative technology that transforms nitrogen oxide into nitrogen and water, which are harmless to humans, by inputting urea in the emission gas expelled by the engine. Such technology has already been partly applied to the diesel engine of large-sized commercial vehicles since 2005, but Doosan Infracore was the world’s first company to develop and apply it to natural gas engines. 《END》
