A total of 33 students took part from Project Hope schools sponsored by Doosan in eleven far-flung regions, including Qinghai, Ningxia, Gansu, Yunnan, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Shandong. The train ride for the students from Golmud, Qinghai Province was a full 30 hours, but they were so excited that they didn't even notice the effects of the long journey. Indeed, all the kids were unable to contain themselves when, upon their arrival, they were given the commemorative T-shirt, pair of pants, cap and water bottle―all bearing the Doosan logo.

We all woke up at 3:00 AM in order to be on time for the flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square at 5:45 AM. One student was unable to sleep at all during his first night in Beijing. We arrived at Tiananmen Square one hour after leaving the hostel, and everyone snapped to attention when the national anthem sounded. Many photos were taken with the famous square in the background, a scene that the children had only seen in textbooks or on TV. They would have much to show and tell their classmates once they returned to their schools.
In the morning, we held the Welcoming Ceremony inside the circular auditorium at the Science and Technology Exhibition Hall. A delegation of Doosan Infracore employees, led by Vice President Baek Seung-chan, urged the children to learn and experience as much as possible during the camp, which can inspire hope and ambitions for the future. Then, they handed out book bags and soccer balls to the children.
In return, the children promised they would study harder and they gave the company employees handicrafts made by the children themselves as a token of gratitude. After the Welcoming Ceremony, we had a look around the Science and Technology Exhibition Hall, which displayed scientific achievements from the past and present while pointing to the direction science will take in the future.
In the afternoon, we went to see the Great Wall of China. There, the children read a famous inscription by the late Mao Zedong: You're not a real man, unless you've got to the Great Wall." They had fun saying that they had become great from that moment and they pledged to act the part of heroes.
In the evening, we enjoyed a great dinner at a famous duck restaurant in Beijing. Despite the hectic schedule, all the kids forgot their fatigue and sang with great gusto.

On this day, we went to the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall to see what the capital looked like in the old days as well as how it has changed recently. The guide showed us how the main Olympic venues would look after they are completed in advance of the 2008 Beijing Games. The children were deeply impressed by the modern architecture with its highly sophisticated technology.
We headed toward Yantai, where Doosan Infracore operates excavator, forklift and machine tool plants, around lunchtime but did not arrive until nearly 8:00 PM. Employees had volunteered to have the children stay at their homes during their time in Yantai, and the families began making preparations about a month in advance. They also had to wait up late for the children to arrive on this day but happily greeted their assigned child as his or her name was called. The day ended with the children going home with their respective families.

The summer camp participants quickly made friends with the children in their home stay families at Yantai. Early in the morning, they assembled at the plant while holding hands with one another. Chief Executive Officer Kim Dong-chul formally welcomed the children on behalf of all the employees.
The children were stunned as they visited the excavator, forklift and machine tool production lines and came to realize just how massive and excellent Doosan really is. The employees' children who joined the plant tour pointed out where their fathers were working and explained what kind of work they did.
After seeing the plant, the children were taken downtown for a look around. That evening, the senior managers from each division hosted a pleasant dinner. The children voluntarily went up on stage to sing their favorite song, dance, recite or play percussion as a way of saying "thank you?to their new-found friends. They were very enthusiastic despite the lack of instrumental accompaniment, and soon the employees' children were up on stage, too. The laughter never stopped.
After dinner, the kids were given a big board to write down their aspirations and convey some words to their host families. The gist of the messages were such sentiments as "May Doosan continue to grow..." "Best wishes to the Doosan family for perpetual happiness and good health..."I'll definitely study harder from now on and become a fine engineer who can help you to build an even better excavator..."
August 16
The employees' children came to the plant along with the summer campers to see them off. The visiting children carried armloads of study aids that were given as gifts from their home stay families. The bus leaving Yantai in the morning would take until evening to reach Beijing, where the children would be sent on their separate ways home.

The first annual Doosan Project Hope Summer Camp, which took many months to prepare, was finally over. The participants returned home with many lasting memories and lots of new friends.
We organized this event as a way to give young Chinese students an opportunity to experience something new. Starting in April, we set about acquiring the campers' uniforms, deciding the schedule, and arranging the home stays so that all guests would have a comfortable time.
The weather was very hot during the camp, but no one complied in the least. The visiting children were exceedingly grateful for everything. The preparations were tedious but truly rewarding when we saw how much the children enjoyed themselves. The campers expressed their hopes for the future with great enthusiasm during the dinner at Yantai. The decorations were not spectacular or lavish, but the children's sincerity truly touched everyone. We are now all hoping that their dreams will be realized someday. The summer camp program will continue in the future, helping more children from remote areas of China to see a broader world and foster ambitions for a better tomorrow.
Doosan Infracore donates part of profits each year to the Project Hope program, which supports schools in China's remote and undeveloped regions. In 2001, the company used the proceeds (about CNY750,000, or US$100,000) from the sale of its 5,000th excavator to build primary schools in rural areas lacking adequate facilities. By last year, Doosan Infracore's aggregate donation to the program had reached CNY2.75 million (US$366,000), and the funds were used to complete new schools in eleven locations throughout the country. Six new schools are currently under construction, and the company plans to fund the building of three new schools each year from now on. In addition, Doosan Infracore donated CNY2.5 million (US$333,000) last year to establish an international school for ethnic Koreans living in the area around Yantai.
